The FDA says all generic drugs are effectively the same as their brand names. But Pharmacy Professor Jan Engle says there can be small differences in how the drugs are absorbed by the body. So, always ask your doctor if it's okay to switch your prescription to generic.
"It's important to talk to your pharmacist to make sure it is ok to take a generic and in some cases it's a good idea to take the same brand of generic," says Engle.
Engle recommends getting to know your pharmacist. Ask which company is making your generic drug and she says if you ever suffer a side effect, whether it's from a generic or brand name drug to write it down, tell your doctor, and report it to the FDA.
