Road Widening Project In South Lubbock Underway

A road project many call "overdue" is underway. The stretch of Indiana Avenue between F.M. 1585 and Woodrow Road is being widened.

Road crews will be working during the day to have the two mile stretch completed by mid-November. In all, the road will be widened four feet, two feet on each side giving drivers a little more room to maneuver down Indiana Avenue.

We stopped several drivers Wednesday who all agree this project is necessary for safety.

  • "It'll improve the safety on this road a lot."
  • "Should have done it a long time ago."
  • "I just think it's a good thing its getting done."
  • "We're very excited to see them widen this road. My husband and I are both paramedics for Lubbock EMS and we were here when the last accident happened down the road and this has been a dangerous road to be one so we're very glad their widening it. It's a safety issue."

It was on this road where Cooper High School student, Kelsey Vines, died when a dump truck collided with her car after Labor Day.

This project is causing some headaches, however. During construction hours sections of Indiana will be reduced to one lane so authorities are asking drivers, when possible, to detour around that road until the project is compete.
