A Chicago hospital is studying a new, experimental type of radiation in the treatment of breast cancer. Dr. Olga Ivanof, a breast cancer surgeon, says, "Literally, the patient comes in, she goes to sleep, two hours later she wakes up, she's done with her breast cancer".
Some oncologists are using this tiny radiation balloon to kill any leftover cancer cells, from the inside out after the tumor is removed. In standard therapy, it is used twice a day for five days. Now, for the first time in this country at the Little Company of Mary Hospital, they are using the balloon therapy just once, during that surgery to remove the tumor so the patient won't have to come back to the hospital at all.
Again, it is still experimental. We will let you know if it becomes available here.
