In just three games into his sixth season as the head coach of the No. 15 Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaparrals basketball team, Steve Gomez has accomplished what no other individual has at LCU: 109 wins.
The Lady Chaps, led by a 25-point performance by Brittany Blackmon, defeated the Lady Mustangs of University of the Southwest 86-67 to improve to 3-0 and provide Gomez with his 109th coaching victory at LCU. The win places Gomez as the Lady Chaps all-time wins leader, passing Dave Carter, who coached the Lady Chaps from1983-1994.
University of the Southwest, playing in its inaugural season, trailed just 11-9 in the first half, but then the Lady Chaps went on a 13-3 run and eventually jumped out to a 48-26 halftime lead. The Lady Chaps were 20-of-27 (74.1%) from the field in the first half. The Lady Mustangs, shooting 61.5% in the second half, cut into the deficit with a 12-4 run to trail 67-56 with just under nine minutes remaining, but the Lady Chaps quickly put the game out of reach with a 16-3 run to place LCU with their largest lead 83-59.
Blackmon was 11-of-12 from the field and co-led the team in rebounds with five. LCU also received offensive production from Shamika Singleton (12 points), Jordan Hampton (11 points) and Sierra Lovorn (10 points). Singleton was a perfect 6-of-6 in the game for her 12 points. The Lady Chaps shot 59.3% from the field (35-of-59) in the game. Sirena Medrano paced USW with 20 points. She was 4-for-4 from behind the three-point line with several bank shots off the glass crashing into the nylon.
The Lady Chaps will complete the home-and-home series with the Lady Mustangs Monday in Hobbs, N.M. with a 6 p.m. (CST) tip-off.
