Mighty Mendit: Does It Work?

Fix a hem without a needle and a thread. The makers promise the Mighty Mendit is a fast grab, quick dry fix to any fallen hem and broken seam problem, but Does It Work?

Vicki Tracy knows a lot about hems. She's been the owner of Bernina Sewing Studio in Lubbock for more than 20 years, but says she's never heard of the Mighty Mendit before.

Mighty Mendit is a permanent bonding agent, that claims to be a "fast-grab" and "quick-dry" fix to, what Vicki jokingly calls "wardrobe malfunctions."

You get three bottles in your package, for $20. There are two ways you can apply Mighty Mendit for fabric flexibility. First we are used a wavy pattern. "This is pretty thick, so I bet it will do the job," she said. Vicki pressed down on the blue jean material and it seemed to hold well.

Next, Vicki gave us an example of broken seam.  "We'll use that dot pattern," she said.  That, too, is for fabric flexibility.  "It would take care of it until you could get a real stitch in it," she said.

"This fabric has weight to it," said Vicki. Even on a rough sweater like material, Mighty Mendit appeared to work.  "It doesn't seem to make it real stiff," noticed Vicki.

The downside to this product is you can't use this product on dry clean only clothes. It will remove the Mighty Mendit adhesive.  You have to wash clothes in cold water, hang dry or tumble dry without heat.  You are not supposed to iron the treated area, as it will make the material stiff.

We went back and checked our materials after they had dried. Each really did seem to have that fast grab and quick dry like the makers claimed. "We do have several types (of mending liquid) on the market.  I haven't seen this. I'm pretty impressed," said Vicki.
