Central Lubbock Residents Fearful Following Sexual Assault

Residents of the neighborhood around 21st Street and Avenue O tell NewsChannel 11 they're scared after the assault just after midnight Friday.

Police believe it was in a dark, vacant lot at 21st and Avenue O that a 45-year-old woman was beaten and sexually assaulted. Police say the woman went to a nearby house for help. The victim was severely beaten and barely able to speak. She was taken to UMC with critical injuries.

Now residents in the area are fearful. "It's still scary and I wish I wouldn't live here. But I have to live here for a while anyway," said Celia Morales.

Police say the suspect is a white man and are continuing to follow leads in this case. If you have any information about this case, please call Crime Line at (806) 741-1000.

NewsChannel 11 was able to speak to family at the home the woman went to for help. They declined an on air interview, but said the victim kept asking that they call her husband, but they decided to call police instead.
