LUBBOCK, Texas - Dominic Seals scored 21 points and Jordan Barncastle recorded her first double-double with career highs of 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead Texas Tech to an 82-69 win over Washington State today at the United Spirit Arena.
The victory didn't come as easily as their Friday night win over Idaho, but the Lady Raiders (2-0) went on a 24-11 in the last nine minutes of the game to secure the win.
The game saw 17 lead changes and 13 times the score was tied. The Cougars (0-1) took a one-point lead at the half, 37-36. Washington State's largest lead was eight with 17:29 to go in the game, while Tech led by as many as 17 points with just over four minutes remaining in the contest.
With the absence of Jordan Murphree, who suffered a back injury in Saturday's practice, freshman Kierra Mallard got her first career start. The three-woman rotation of Seals, Mallard and Barncastle gave Tech a presence in the middle. The spark off the bench was Barncastle, who scored 10 of her 14 points in the second half. And nine of her boards were also in the second period.
Tilmila Martin also scored in double figures for the Lady Raiders as she had a career-high 14 points.
Tech shot just under 50 percent from the field, finishing at 49.1 percent (26-53), compared to Washington State's 37.1 percent (26-70). The Lady Raiders outrebounded the Cougars 43-35.
Washington State was led by Katie Appleton with 17 points. Appleton hit three of the Cougars' 10 three-pointers on the day.
