Two drugs that are already on the market to treat some cancers could hold the key to putting diabetes patients into a permanent remission. The focus is on Type-1 diabetes, which is an auto-immune problem.
So far, studies have been done only in mice, but researchers say when used to treat type-one diabetes, the results, at least in the lab, are very promising. "Using drugs that are already approved has the ability potentially to rapidly move from the benchside into the clinic and that was a real motivation for us in doing the studies in the first place," says Dr. Jeffrey Bluestone, UCSF Diabetes Center Immunobiologist.
Scientists are hopeful that, within a year, one or both of these drugs may be available for use in treating diabetes.
