Tuesday night, the big headline is "No Breakthrough". This is discouraging to the millions who had hoped that a certain herbal remedy would slow or stop the progressive memory loss that comes with Alzheimer's disease.
The supplement under study is gingko biloba, since so many people who truly believe it can help improve the memory. In a study that spanned seven years combining research from the University of Pittsburg and the University of Virginia; the results are finally in and the results were disappointing.
The study appears in this week's JAMA, Journal of the American Medical Association. A group of three thousand people took either ginkgo biloba or a placebo for seven years and researchers had hoped that the supplement would at least delay the onset of Alzheimer's. Towards the end of the study, there wasn't any evidence that the supplement would help with memory loss.
