A review of 300 weight loss ads by the Federal Trade Commission finds most are just based on desire not evidence. "40% of the ads we reviewed contained at least one claim that is most certainly false," says Timothy J. Muris, Chairman of the Federal Trade Commission.
"There are no quick fixes for overweight and obesity, achieving and maintaining healthy weight requires a lifelong commitment," says Richard H. Carmona, Surgeon General Vice-Admiral.
More than half the ads failed to back up claims like "lose a pound a day" or "lose weight without exercise." But the report says that does not stop millions of Americans from spending billions on wishful thinking.
