Why is it so important to get a handle on stress? That is the focus of this edition of "Sharp Advice." Former Lady Raider coach Marsha Sharp sheds light on some great simple ways to relieve stress in your life.
In this fast-paced world that we live in, stress relief is more important than ever. Covenant Family Practitioner Dr. Beth Cochran stresses the importance of stress management.
"Stress kicks our body into the fight or flight response. We release stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. Those hormones increase our heart rate, they increase our blood pressure, and they can even increase our blood sugar. And at the same time, our body shuts down natural functions like the immune system, the digestive system, any of the non-essential body systems," says Dr Chochran.
Luckily, stress management can be easy and even fun. Dr. Cochran adds, "If you can't afford to take a vacation or get out of town, you can do a mini-vacation at home. Take a bubble bath, listen to music, read a book, laughter, gardening, any of those things can help relieve stress. Actually, laughter is one of the best ways to relieve stress. It lowers the stress hormones, takes your mind off things, and can actually improve immune function".
