A driver discovered a woman dead underneath the East Loop overpass near Southeast Drive late Saturday morning. Authorities tell NewsChannel 11 the victim is 25-year-old Kristine Noelle Bufkin.
Under the Southeast Loop 289 overpass just feet away from railroad tracks, Captain Greg Stevens says the driver of a black SUV discovered a body Saturday. "It is a female approximately mid twenties. It appears to be a white female," Stevens said.
Homicide investigators were called to the scene around 11 o'clock Saturday morning. However, something on this scene lead police to believe it could be a hit and run. "There are a lot of factors that indicate that a vehicle was involved and in fact it does appear that the victim was contacted by a vehicle," Stevens said.
Stevens says over-night sheriff deputies found a one-car roll over in East Lubbock County on fm 1729. Police detectives now believe that car to belong to the victim, who was found several miles away. Nearly four hours after police found the body Stevens says clues lead investigators to a suspect vehicle in the county.
"There are no obvious signs of homicide right now that's why were handling it as a hit and run accident but again it's an open investigation and after the autopsy is complete we'll have more information into which direction the investigation will take," Stevens said.
An autopsy is scheduled for the upcoming week. If you know anything about this case, you are urged to call Crime Line at 741-1000.
