New Flood Zones Could Mean Higher Home Owners Insurance

The Federal Emergency Management Agency released new flood zone maps for the City of Lubbock and surrounding communities. City Engineer Skipper Wood says, if you have a federally funded home in one of the flood zones, you will have to pay for flood insurance. If you don't have a federal loan, you may still have to buy flood insurance, depending on your bank. Wood says the zones could change again, once the city's storm drainage project is finished.

"These new maps won't reflect that storm sewer project. We will go back and re-do those panels that will have that storm sewer project on it, but it will probably still take maybe as much as a couple of years," said Wood.

Wood says more than 5,000 homes are now effected by the new flood zones. To find out if your house is in a flood zone, you can call the city engineer's office at (806) 775-2331.
