Woman Dies in House Fire

A woman died inside her home on Tuesday night when it went up in flames, but not before her husband tried to save her. The fire broke out just before 11:00 p.m. last night at a trailer home, near Idalou. Firefighters quickly put out the fire, but they were unable to save 83 year-old Fannie Johnson -- who was still trapped inside the home.

Captain Bill Drewell, with the Lubbock County Sheriff's Department, says that Fannie's husband, Lester, made it to safety, but he tried to go back in for his wife. Neighbors say they knew the Johnson's well. "I've known them for a while. I used to help him run errands and stuff. He's a little bit older, so it's hard for him to drive around," says James Cobb, Jr., a neighbor.

The Idalou Fire Department and the state fire marshal's office are investigating the case. Officials say it looks like the fire may have started in the kitchen area.
