Neighbors React To Plainview Murder

Posted:

One man is dead and another in custody after a love triangle took a turn for the worst in Plainview Friday.

Monday, family and friends gathered to mourn at 28-year-old Christopher Sanchez's funeral. He was shot and killed by 31-year-old Sacarias Dee Pena in Plainview on Friday.

"About four to six gun shots we heard about 5:30 a.m. or so, and I was already awake, and when I heard them I jumped up," said Darin Cook who lives across the street from where the shooting took place.

Neighbors in the 1000 block of Vernon in Plainview were shocked by what they saw when they woke up Friday morning. Cook walked out his front door and saw a man wounded in the street. "He was right here lying on the ground," said Cook.

"You could just see him, just lying on the ground there. It was like, you know, he's not moving. Is he ok? What happened? It was crazy," said neighbor Casaundra Gonzales.

Neighbors called 911 around 6:30 a.m. Friday morning and reported multiple shots fired.  One of the bullets missed its mark, travelled, and went through the window of the house across the street, waking up the people who live at this home, and several other neighbors.  Police arrived and arrested Pena in his front yard, where the shooting took place. An emergency response crew took the victim, Sanchez, to Covenant Hospital in Plainview where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the two men knew each other. They both worked in the prison system, and were both involved with the same woman. "We know there was a history between Mr. Sanchez, the victim, and Mr. Pena's ex-wife, and it was probably a development of that," said Captain Michael Carroll of the Plainview Police Department.

Pena is charged with murder and is awaiting trial. If convicted, he faces anywhere from five years to life in prison.
