Savannah Ellis arrived at the South Plains Mall at 3:45 a.m. Friday morning just before the first store opened. "I saved quite a bit just awhile ago at J.C. Penney's," said Ellis.
But you don't have to be the first in the door to get a good deal.
"No, no 5 a.m., can't get up that early. But they haven't run out of anything. I've found everything I've wanted. There are some good sales out there," said Black Friday shopper Jacy Beccue.
"I had specific things I wanted, I got those and now we're just looking around," said Jackie Marquez.
"The sales are good. I've been saving a lot of money," said Justin Cook of Levelland.
Despite a tough economy, retailers remain optimistic. Beth Bridges of South Plains Mall anticipates a good season and believes people are just ready to shop.
South Plains Mall expects nearly 70,000 shoppers on Black Friday and up to 150,000 over the course of the weekend.
The mall closes at 9 p.m. but J.C. Penny remains open until 11 p.m. with deals for last minute shoppers.
