Montford Visits Lubbock on Company Business

Former Texas Tech Chancellor John Montford paid a visit to the Hub City on Tuesday. Montford pushed his vision for economic development in Lubbock on Tuesday afternoon at the Chamber of Commerce luncheon. He then talked about the challenges facing the telecommunications industry.

You'll recall Montford is now the President of Southwestern Bell Company in San Antonio. Montford says that SBC is fighting for even handed regulations of high speed internet access. "We're still regulated while cable and satellite aren't regulated," says Montford. "And as a consequence, there's not a level playing field, and we simply want the same chance that everyone else has."

Montford says unbalanced regulations drive down competition. In the long run, he says consumers lose because choices are limited, and that means higher costs. SBC is hoping Texas lawmakers will pass a pro-competition policy in the next few months.
