Lubbock County Autopsy Plans Not Final

It is not a done deal that Lubbock County will stop doing autopsies for other West Texas counties. NewsChannel 11 learned that from County Commissioner Patty Jones Thursday night.

Jones says reports are incorrect that Lubbock County has finalized plans for its medical examiner's office. She confirms that Lubbock County is looking to hire a medical examiner that will answer to the Commissioner's Court.

That would be a change, because for several years the various medical examiners, including Thomas Eaver, answered primarily to the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center. The legality of that arrangement has been challenged.

Jones says the goal is to get set up so that Lubbock can do autopsies for other West Texas counties, but it is still just that; a goal.
