Councilman Injured in Overnight Assault

On this Christmas Eve, Lubbock City Councilman John Leonard is home recovering from injuries he suffered in an early morning assault that sent him to the hospital.

Police say they responded to a phone call shortly before 1 a.m. in the 6700 block of 82nd Street at the Dakota Arms Apartments. Police tell us Leonard and 34-year-old Jessica Harris were on the first floor and walked upstairs several times to tell the neighbors directly above them to turn down loud music.

On the final trip upstairs, police say that's when Leonard suffered facial fractures and contusions when an altercation broke out. The city says Leonard refused EMS and went to University Medical Center in a personal vehicle.

Police say there are three suspects and that no one has been charged or arrested and the investigation is still ongoing.

When we spoke with Councilman Leonard Wednesday morning, he said he was home resting up. We also left a message with Mayor Tom Martin Wednesday afternoon, but have not heard back from him yet.

Stay tuned to NewsChannel 11 for the latest development in this investigation.
