Councilman Recovering Following Assault

City Councilman John Leonard continues to recover from facial fractures and contusions after three men assaulted him early Wednesday morning at the Dakota Arms Apartments.

Police say it started shortly after 12:30 a.m. when 34-year-old Jessica Harris went to the apartment directly above them to ask the men to turn down the loud music. They started arguing and followed Harris back downstairs. When one of the men tried to go into her apartment, she and Leonard pushed him out. That's when police say the three men assaulted the councilman.

Leonard was treated for his injuries at University Medical Center. He tells NewsChannel 11 he is in a lot of pain but is recovering at home.

The three suspects were not at the apartment when police arrived but they have been identified. According to the police report, at least one of the men had been drinking at the time of the assault.

So far no one has been arrested and no charges have been filed. NewsChannel 11 will continue following this investigation and will bring you the latest as it becomes available.
