UMC Activities Center Helps Seniors Keep Resolutions

On HealthWise at 5 Thursday, Larry Sava the Wellness Director of the UMC Activites Center located in Rockridge Plaza in Southwest Lubbock gave some great advice to help seniors keep thier New Year's resolutions.

"It is a fact that those who commit to a regular program, class, or activity that requires attendance outside the home will succeed at a better rate that those who try at it alone.  We have a program for you," says Sava. 

Some of the most popular resolutions from seniors are:

  • Lose weight
  • Stay fit/get fit
  • Improve balance and mobility
  • Have more fun/reduce stress

Some strategies:

  • To lose weight, do endurance activities and strengthening
  • To reduce stress, do relaxing activities such as yoga, meditation, Tai Chi
  • To improve balance and mobility, do Tai Chi, balance program
  • To have more fun, do group and social activities such as dancing, line dancing, belly dancing, social parties, trips with other seniors
  • To get/stay fit, do group exercise, senior exercise classes

Suggestions:

  • Make resolutions/goals that are important to you
  • Goals should be attainable and within your abilities
  • Make goal markers/mini-goals
  • Have a goal partner/buddy
  • Be determined, be resolute, and have a great year!
