Lady Chaps Use Late Run to Top USAO 70-68

LUBBOCK, Texas The No. 6 Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaparrals used a late 9-0 run to edge University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma 70-68 Saturday afternoon in Sooner Athletic Conference competition at Rip Griffin Center.

The LCU run started with 4:22 remaining in the contest.  Trailing 64-58, Jordan Hampton, who was 0-for-8 from three-point range Thursday, hit a three-point basket to cut the deficit to 64-61. A pair of free throws from Bailey St. Clair and a field goal by Severyn Smith erased the deficit and gave the Lady Chaps a 65-64 lead with 2:46 left.  The Lady Chaps never trailed from that point.  USAO had the ball for the final ten seconds but never was able to get off a final shot.

LCU never led by more than three points and never trailed by more than seven points.  The game featured 13 lead changes and the game was tied on nine occasions.  Hampton finished three-for-three from three-point range and co-led the team with 15 points.  Bailey St. Clair, coming off of a career high 20-point performance Thursday, also had 15 points. Ashley Coggins finished with 14 points and Smith tallied 10 points in the victory.

To garner the win, LCU had to fight past a tremendous offensive performance by USAO's Ivaney Marquez.  She was five-for-six from three-point range for 19 points, and also had five rebounds, three blocks and three steals.  Both teams were successful beyond the arch, as USAO was 8-for-15 (53.3%) and LCU was 7-for-13 (53.8%).  The Lady Chaps shot 50% from the field (27-of-55).

The Lady Chaps improve to 13-2 with the win and 6-1 in SAC competition.  The loss for USAU places them with an 8-7 mark and 2-5 in the SAC.  LCU returns to action Thursday in Shawnee, Oklahoma with a 6 p.m. tip against Oklahoma Baptist.
