Pointers for Good Posture

Did you mom used to tell you to sit up or stand up straight? Well, researchers know now that poor posture can put more than a slouch in your stature, whether you are sitting behind a desk or standing on your feet all day. Chiropractor Peter Sansone says that poor posture is a leading cause of low back pain and arthritis-like joint pain.

"You really want to stand up as straight as possible, keep your shoulders back, make sure your pelvis is rotated forward a little bit and that should be just fine. If you're sitting at a computer for more than 20 minutes use a timer. Set the timer for 20 minutes and then get up out of your chair and stretch," says Chiropractor, Peter Sansone.

To reduce back trouble, the American Chiropractic Association offers these tips in the office:

  • Keep things you use often like the phone, calendar and appointment book within easy reach.
  • Your chair should be a comfortable height and provide adequate back support.
  • Women should avoid wearing heels because that adds extra stress on the back.
