We're just a few days from passing the baton of power from one president to the next. I'm hoping for great things out of Barack Obama because if he does well, then we'll all do well. But this week I want to focus on the outgoing president.
He's made his fair share of mistakes and he knows that but, consider this, President George W. Bush has not gotten credit for the amazing accomplishments of the last eight years.
From September 11, 2001 to the present, there has not been a single terrorist attack on U.S. soil. Wow. Can you even conceive how big an accomplishment that is? No one could have predicted that 7 and a half years ago.
In addition, there were 52 months of job growth during the Bush administration - not too bad. We made good progress on renewable energy and that's great for both Lubbock and Texas Tech.
Bush defended our Second Amendment rights which, from a conservative point of view, is an accomplishment. He got his tax cut plan passed through the Congress, which is one of the biggest tax reforms in U.S. history. Although some don't feel like that's an accomplishment, it really is.
Furthermore, he ordered the surge in Iraq with a "take and hold" strategy that has brought considerable peace and stability to Iraq in the last two years.
The next president will be blessed to have the same number and same caliber of accomplishments as the outgoing president.
