With the down economy, more and more people are using the South Plains Food Bank. But now NewsChannel 11 has good news. On Thursday the food bank announced that it became part of the fresh recovery program. That means United Supermarkets will give food with a quickly approaching expiration date.
The food bank has been working the past nine months to get the program started, and says it wouldn't be possible without a partner like United. David Weaver, executive director, says, "Allowing us to come in and offer the fresh produce, and dairy products and eggs and other perishable items that are going to make such a difference to our clients."
Weaver says the food bank also has new equipment to make sure the perishable food is stored at safe temperatures.
