Food for Thought Report 10.17

This week is a big one for those Top Performers, five in all. And the Low Performing list is a little lonely. But let's start off with those perfect scoring places, beginning with the latest addition to a long time Lubbock favorite in this installment of Food for Thought.

For 20 years you've seen them at 4th and University, and now Spanky's Two is starting strong. Located at 5405 Slide Road, they are Food for Thought Top Performer this week with zero critical violations. Owner Lisa West says they're working hard to keep the Spanky's tradition going.

"We've tried to work closely with the health department to maintain the highest level of standards in what they expect from us and hopefully exceed those and here we strive for the same, we have a great crew and they all come in everyday giving 100%," says West.

West says that crew has a strong leader in manager Josie Garcia, and her motivation combined with a plan for action are a recipe for success. "We have an after lunch punch where we go through and we do the cleaning and restocking and everything and we do this after all the rushes and that helps maintain the cleanliness through the day so it's not so difficult to keep up," says West.

Continuing our top performing list, J&J BBQ at 1306 Texas Avenue also gets a perfect score.

LaLa's Restaurant at 1110 Broadway brings in a Top Performance.

So does Sweet Temptations at 6625 19th Street, also with zero critical violations.

Rounding out the list of perfect performances is Taco Villa at 5220 75th Street with zero critical violations.

Our only low performer this time is Salsa at 5029 I-27. That's where four critical violations were found. Violations including:

  • Coolers not maintaining temperatures of 45 degrees or cooler.
  • Hot foods were found at temperatures of 113 degrees to 79 degrees, hot foods must be kept at a minimum of 140 degrees.
  • A tub of sour cream had mold in it.
  • A an opener was found to be soiled--food contact surfaces must be kept clean.

We were unable to reach the management at Salsa's for comment on their inspection.
