Chopper Crash in South Texas

A helicopter crashes on the campus of the University of Texas Pan American. A helicopter filled with guests headed to the University of Texas Pan American crashed on the campus.

Four people suffered minor injuries as the chopper came to rest near the Field House sports complex. The chopper came to rest about 20 feet away from a building.

Edinburg Fire Department spokesman Ray Ramirez says there was no fire and those on board suffered slight injuries.

UTPA Vice President of External Affairs Roland Arriola witnessed the crash. He says the helicopter, carrying five men, was caught in a gust of wind and got turned around. Arriola says the chopper than hit the ground pretty hard.

Edinburg fire fighters covered the helicopter with foam to prevent any type of fire. The accident happened as the university wraps up its celebration of Hispanic Engineering, Science and Technology Week.

School spokeswoman Julia Benitez-Sullivan says the helicopter carried members of the Air Force, the U.S. Army Research Labs and the pilot.
