Lubbock has a reputation for getting rid of prairie dogs, which can tear up your lawn, and cause other problems. And the city got into a controversy several years ago for killing or removing prairie dogs from city owned property east of the city limits.
A group called WildEarth Guardians gives Texas a "D minus" for protecting prairie dogs. The group says five species of prairie dogs have lost 90 percent of their natural habitat due to several factors including shooting and poisoning.
