2-1-1 Day celebrated in Texas

February 11, 2009 is a special day in Texas. It is known as 2-1-1 Day that is celebrated by the entire state.

The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) has declared this date "Texas 2-1-1 Day," and organizations statewide will be educating people about 2-1-1, the free, three-digit phone number that connects callers with services in their community that can improve their health and quality of life.

"We're dedicating this day to letting Lubbock-area residents that 2-1-1 is the number to call when they don't know who to call," said Aida , Director of 2-1-1 Texas South Plains. "When you dial 2-1-1, a trained expert will listen to your needs and provide anonymous referrals to local community resources that can help with everything from finding food, housing, and childcare to crisis counseling or substance abuse treatment."

2-1-1 Texas is a free, information and referral line answered by nationally certified specialists 24 hours a day, seven days a week. When callers dial 2-1-1, they are connected to area information centers in their region. These trained experts have access to the most comprehensive database of community-based organizations, government agencies and nonprofits that exist in Texas. Information can be provided in more than 90 languages, including Spanish.
