An off duty Dallas Police Officer died Wednesday morning when his patrol car exploded after it was struck. The officer was sitting in his cruiser when a Jeep hit the car from behind. The car reportedly burst into flames killing the officer. Officer Patrick Metzler was an eight-year veteran of the police force. He was 31 years-old. EMS took the driver of the Jeep and his passenger to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Police believe alcohol and speeding may have caused the accident.

Veterinarians are now checking all the dogs, but so far they all appear healthy. City workers hope to place the dogs with local rescue groups, but say many may be put to sleep.
