Timothy Cole's posthumous exoneration could lead to new legislation

LUBBOCK, TX - (KCBD) Timothy Cole became the first Texan posthumously exonerated of a crime; two groups are pressing law makers to pass bills that could prevent others from being wrongfully accused.

If passed, the bills would allow law enforcement to take DNA from suspects arrested for class B misdemeanors. The other part would include legal standards for how police can collect eye-witness evidence.

Proponents of the bills say taking DNA samples would help police find criminals and let the innocent go, but some believe the proposition is an invasion of privacy.

The family of Timothy Cole supports the bills.

No decisions have been made, but the Texas house recently appointed committees who will soon debate and vote on the bills.
