LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - HIB is the most common cause of bacterial meningitis. Without immediate treatment, it has a significant death rate. There is a vaccine to treat it but with a growing trend among some parents not to have their kids vaccinated, officials say it's resulting in outbreaks of disease with many germs circulating more easily through the entire community.
Dr. Ruth Lynfield, Minnesota State Epidemiologist, said, "Three of the five children who have this terrible infection have not received vaccines because of parental refusal, and that is very troubling."
A recent federal court ruling decided there is no evidence of a link between vaccines and autism. So now, public officials are hoping that decision will relieve the fear in parents and encourage them to adopt a routine immunization schedule.
