LUBBOCK,TX (KCBD) - New research on the flu could someday change the way we protect ourselves against the virus. Scientists at Harvard Medical School have identified antibodies that protect against a wide range of flu virus strains which includes the bird flu.
Dr. Wayne Marasco says "We have identified a new area on the influenza virus that acts as an Achilles heel. The virus does not have the ability to evade the immune system, when the immune system is directed to this area." Dr. Anthony Fauci adds, "It shows that you can get an antibody that can not only knock out the virus, but it is also directed against a part of the virus that does not seem to change from strain to strain."
Scientists are hopeful this discovery could lead to a single flu vaccine that would fight the flu all every year.
