Type 1 diabetes does not care about size or genetics. A child with that disorder can be very thin with no family history of the disease. That was the focus on Tuesday's segment HealthWise at Five. Dr. Daina Dremaine, a pediatric endocrinologist at the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center, talked about early warning signs.

Dr. Dremaine says, "Don't wait. If you can take the child to the doctor, it's inexpensive to get a blood sample to check the blood glucose level. And for caregivers, would it be parents, teachers, baby sitters, it's very important to know those early warning signs". Dr. Dremaine says that right now, about 500 children across the South Plains are being treated for type 1 diabetes and that number increases by another 20 to 30 children every year.
