In honor of the 100th birthday of the City of Lubbock, Southwest Airlines and the Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport sponsored an art contest with entries by Lubbock ISD middle school and high school students.
In conjunction with the City of Lubbock Centennial, all submitted art is centered on Lubbock's heritage, history and culture, giving students the freedom to be creative in their work. Artists with the best 15 entries were flown to Dallas Wednesday, courtesy of Southwest Airlines, to tour the Dallas Museum of Art. The winning entries were on display at the Lubbock airport through the months of November and December.
The fifteen winners of the Lubbock Centennial Art Contest are Audra Fields, Sarah Jones, Rachael Sappington, Aicha Fokar, Robert Woody, Dorothy Tan and Madeleine Cardenas from Hutchinson Middle School, Kasey Graham from Irons Middle School, Jackie Garza and Donovan Stevens from Smiley Wilson Middle School, Sonya de la Cruz from Mackenzie Middle School, and Irene Aguilar and Armando Arellano from Cavazos Middle School. I'esha Wallace and Jovon Anderson round out the winners from Estacado High School.
