LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - ALS, also called Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive disease that kills nerve cells in the brain, leading to weakness, paralysis, and death.
Most cases are random, but 10% of the time there is a family connection. Now researchers in London and at Massachusetts General Hospital have identified a gene linked to those with the inherited form of the disease.
Experts are hopeful that, someday, they can use this information to screen for and even treat the disease.
