DNA Tracks Down Suspected Rapist

More than a year ago, a Lubbock grand jury indicted an accused rapist, solely based on the DNA he left behind. Now, 18 months later, a name was added to the indictment.

42-year-old Sammy Hickman of Amarillo is charged with Aggravated Sexual Assault and Burglary of a Habitation with the Intent to Commit Sexual Assault. He was identified by the state's combined DNA index system, or CODIS.

According to police reports, once he was confronted with the evidence, Hickman confessed to two unsolved rapes, one in Lubbock, the other in Amarillo. All registered sex offenders and prisoners convicted of violent crime must submit a sample to CODIS.
