Deadly Well Blowout Near Crane

A well explosion Tuesday in West Texas killed one person and left seven hurt. Crane County Sheriff Danny Simmons says there was a flash fire as crews were injecting melted paraffin into a well.

The accident site is about 10 miles west of Crane, in a rural area off state Highway 329. The well is owned by CrownQuest of Midland.

57 year old Sam Miller was killed in the accident. Two of the injured are being treated in Lubbock, at University Medical Center. 53 year old Larry Simmons was in critical condition, late Tuesday night. 33 year old Tippy Beck was considered serious. Five others are being treated at hospitals in Crane and Odessa.

Sheriff Simmons says the well site was secured for the night and state regulators have been contacted. Crane is a community of about 3,200 located 30 miles south of Odessa.
