Wind fuels grass fire in Hockley County

HOCKELY COUNTY, TX (KCBD) - Five area fire departments fought the raging wind Thursday to put out a huge grassfire. Levelland fire crews got the call just before noon. By late Thursday afternoon teams from Smyer, Anton, Whiteface and West Carlisle were in northwest Hockley County to assist.

Flames broke out north of Whitharral, a few miles west of Highway 380. Fire crews were still on the scene dousing flames late Thursday afternoon. Levelland Fire Chief Marvin Brewer estimates the flames stretched one mile wide and two miles long.

Brewer says teams needed to get all the flames out before they determined exactly how large the fire was and how it started.  "It's more ranch land. There are a few structures. The fire threatened one mobile home. We were able to get in there and get the hot spots knocked down around it. I think were in good shape there," Brewer said.

Flames damaged some power lines and lines to some pump-jacks, but no homes were destroyed.  We'll have the latest tonight on NewsChannel 11 at 10.
