Fatal Car Wreck on South University

Just after six Saturday evening, DPS was called out to South University where a suburban, a van, and a Lincoln car collided. Officials at the scene say the suburban was traveling North and hit the van head on. Then, DPS Corporal John Gonzalez says, the Lincoln was following the van and was hit as well.

The driver of the suburban, 58 year-old Manuel Biaza of Slaton died. Darel and Virginia Durant were inside the Lincoln Continental. Virginia was treated and released from University Medical Center. Darel was taken to Covenant Medical Center and remains in critical condition Sunday night. The female driver of the van had no injuries.

Corporal Gonzalez says alcohol was found inside the suburban but they have not determined if it was the cause of the accident.

"We're still investigating the accident to find out where the vehicle was heading and the cause of the accident. We don't have anything as far as witnesses. We're still investigating at this time," said Gonzalez.

Traffic was blocked from the area for several hours as DPS troopers tried to clear the scene.
