LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - The Red Raiders close out non-conference play hosting undefeated Houston 3:15 p.m. Saturday at Jones AT&T Stadium. The Cougars have scored 45 points in each of their first two games with their fast tempo offense.
Red Raider Coach Kliff Kingsbury knows his team must be ready to deal with that. “Having your team understand that this is as talented a team as we’ve played. Ole Miss was a very good football team, but you look at this team offensively, defensively, they’ve got guys that can go and can play for anybody. So I think you’re going to have the tempo offense coming in, the quarterback is very dynamic, really talented skill, and then that defense has a lot of veteran players, has the best player in America on it who can disrupt an entire game plan by himself. So I think just understanding what is coming here and the intensity that the game is going to bring.”
The Red Raiders opened as a 2 1/2 point favorite, but the line has moved this week to Houston being a 1 point favorite. Cougars Coach Major Applewhite knows coming to Lubbock will be a tall task for his team as they go on the road for the first time.
“It’s never too early to start getting prepared for what your players are going to go through. Their first time actually getting on a plane, fly, land, have to have you id. Go to the stadium, walk through, all the different things that go in and out of your brain. as you get ready to go compete on Saturday. In terms of Tech playing at Jones Stadium, it’s always a good environment. It’s a great challenge to go on the road and we are looking forwards to it.”
With Big 12 play starting next week and three straight games against ranked teams: Oklahoma State, West Virginia and TCU, this game with Houston is a huge one for the Red Raiders.
