LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - A member of the Lubbock Atheist community has been scheduled to give the invocation at a Lubbock City Council meeting in January 2019.

According to Lubbock Mayor Dan Pope, the City Secretary’s Office facilitates and schedules the people who would like to give the invocation.

The City Secretary’s Office referred KCBD back to Mayor Pope.

Mayor Pope released the following statement:

“A member of the Lubbock atheist community has requested to offer the invocation prior to an upcoming City Council meeting. We are evaluating this request and our existing policy regarding selection of who provides the invocation to open our Council meetings.”

Atheism is, in the broadest sense, the absence of belief in the existence of deities. Less broadly, atheism is the rejection of belief that any deities exist.
