Person parked at rest stop killed after other vehicle loses control near Shallowater
SHALLOWATER, TX (KCBD) - One person is dead after a two-vehicle crash Friday morning northwest of Shallowater on Highway 84 and County Road 1100 near a highway rest stop.
Emergency officials were called to the rest stop at around 3 a.m. after a driver in a Dodge Charger hit a Nissan that was parked at the rest stop, according to officials with the Department of Public Safety.
The driver of the parked vehicle, a 2005 Nissan passenger car, pulled into the rest stop to sleep while the driver of the other vehicle, 32-year-old Dennis R. Abeyta of Littlefield, in a 2016 Dodge Charger, was traveling west on Highway 84, lost control and drove into the parked vehicle.
The person in the parked vehicle, 40-year-old Kenley Gene Raney of Henderson, Nevada, was killed and the other vehicle ended up on a set of railroad tracks that was near that location.
DPS had to stop a train that was to pass by that location to get the car off the tracks. The driver who survived was taken to University Medical Center with unknown injuries.
DPS says speed and alcohol are considered to be factors in this accident.
