LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - KCBD broke the news about problems in the Lubbock County Medical Examiner Office weeks ago. Now, with one lawsuit filed and a Texas Rangers investigation of the Medical Examiner, things appear to have gone from bad to worse.
County Commissioners hired the present group October 1. In less than six months we find ourselves with both present and past medical examiners under scrutiny, accusations leveled at a county commissioner and a district attorney possibly unable to try murder cases because of questions about the Medical Examiner.
It is clear the last commissioners court did little or no background check on the medical examiner before hiring him. If they had, I assume they’d have found red flags right and left … like those raised in Travis County over him changing his opinion on the stand in an Austin trial.
Questions about the Medical Examiner could cloud criminal and civil cases for years.
Consider this … the new county commissioners court must act quickly and decisively to fix the problems at the Lubbock County Medical Examiner Office so our new District Attorney can try murder cases.
We’ve been down this road before and we know delay will only create more turmoil.
