LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Storms can be emotionally and financially overwhelming. Lubbock State Farm Agent Nichole Forman joined KCBD with tips on how to prepare and recover when a storm strikes.
Forman recommends reviewing your insurance coverage in advance and create a home inventory list. She suggested taking photos of your home.
During threatening weather, move cars, boats, RVs and outdoor furniture under cover. Forman recommends closing drapes, blinds and shades to reduce blowing glass broken by hail.
If remodeling, Forman said to consider impact resistant roofing to reduce potential hail damage.
After the storm clears, Forman said to document any damage with pictures and make temporary repairs to prevent additional damage. She said to save receipts and take photos of those repairs to show your insurance adjuster.
When it comes to hiring a contractor, State Farm suggests turning to friends and neighbors to find someone who comes highly recommended.
Agents warn of door-to-door solicited repairs and recommend property owners get multiple written estimates. Experts advise you to not pay up front and inspect the completed work before making a payment.
