The Texas Tech University System Board of Regents elected today (March 21) Christopher M. Huckabee and J. Michael Lewis chairman and vice chairman, respectively, during a special-called meeting of the board by telephone conference this afternoon.

“Congratulations to Chairman Huckabee and Vice Chairman Lewis on being elected by their fellow board members,” Texas Tech University System Chancellor and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center President Dr. Tedd L. Mitchell said. “I look forward to working closely with these outstanding leaders as we advance the Texas Tech System and each of our institutions. I would also like to thank Regent Tim Lancaster for his leadership and service to the board as chairman. I am grateful for all of our regents’ commitment to serving their alma maters.”

Huckabee, who was appointed to serve on the board in 2015 by Gov. Greg Abbott, will take over as chairman of the board immediately.

The Fort Worth native was named vice chairman of the Board of Regents in Oct. 2018 and has previously served the board as a member of the Facilities and Investment Advisory committees.

Huckabee is the CEO of Huckabee Architecture, Engineering and Program Management, a 300-person firm dedicated to educational design.

Gov. Rick Perry twice appointed Huckabee to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board where he chaired the Agency Operations Committee. Huckabee is a past board member for Cook Children’s Health Foundation and Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth.

He is also Chair Emeritus of the Board of the North Texas Community Foundation and is active in the Fort Worth chapter of the Young Presidents Organization.

Lewis, of Dallas, was appointed to the Board of Regents in 2017 by Gov. Abbott. He has previously served the board as the chairman of the Carr Foundation Board of Trustees, as a member of the Finance and Administration Committee and the Investment Advisory Committee of the Texas Tech University Endowment. Lewis has also served as a board member for the Texas Tech Foundation.

Lewis has also served as chairman of the Jerry S. Rawls College of Business Administration Advisory Council, TTU System Chancellor’s Council and the Matador Society. In addition, he was named a Distinguished Alumnus of the Rawls College of Business in 2014.

Community leadership has long been important to Lewis as he has served the State of Texas on the Governor’s University Research Initiative Advisory Board. In 1989, he and his wife, Robin, co-founded Providence Christian School of Texas, a nonprofit, non-denominational school, and were founding directors of the West Dallas Community School in 1995 where Lewis continues to serve on its board today. He is a director of the State Fair of Texas, member of the Baylor Health Care System Foundation Advisory Board and a member of the Salesmanship Club of Dallas.

The next scheduled meeting of the TTU System Board of Regents is May 16-17, in Lubbock, at the TTU System Administration Building.
