ANAHEIM, CA (KCBD) - The 3rd-seeded Red Raiders are heading to the Final 4 for the first time in school history as they knocked off top-seeded Gonzaga 75-69 to win the West Regional in Anaheim, California.
In a battle of the Red Raiders top-ranked defense and Gonzaga’s top-ranked offense, the Bulldogs led 37-35 at the half. However, the Tech defense forced 9 first half Gonzaga turnovers and 16 in the game. Gonzaga averaged 90 points a game.
Scoring on three straight possessions, the Red Raiders went up 53-50 with 10 minutes left in the game.
Davide Moretti hit a big 3 to put Tech up 63-58 with 3:30 left and another 3 to put the Red Raiders up 66-60 with 1:40 left. Texas Tech hit their last 11 free throws they took to keep the lead and punch their ticket to the Final 4.
Jarrett Culver led the way with 19 points while Matt Mooney added 17 points. Davide Moretti scored 12.
Texas Tech is the first Texas school to reach the Final 4 since the Texas Longhorns did in 2003.
Texas Tech will face Michigan State in the Final 4 in Minneapolis, MN on Saturday. Virginia will face Auburn in other Final 4 Matchup. We’ll add the time for this game as soon as it’s announced.
