LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Opera singer Susan Graham and author Barry Lopez will take the stage this year as the spring 2019 commencement speakers for Texas Tech. The ceremonies are scheduled for Friday, May 17, and Saturday, May 18.
Graham, a Tech alumna, has performed operas around the world alongside artists like Renee Fleming, Anna Netrebko and Placido Domingo, in the New York Metropolitan Opera, the Sydney Opera House and Hollywood Bowl.
She is a Grammy Award winner and has been performing for four decades.
Lopez, a noted author and essayist, is a National Book Award winner for his 1986 book “Arctic Dreams.” He has also received the John Burroughs and Christopher medals and the Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts.
Lopez is also a visiting distinguished scholar at Tech.
This year’s ceremonies will be split up into two days, with four separate ceremonies.
Graham will speak during the Friday ceremonies, which begin at 2:30 p.m. with the commencement of the College of Arts and Sciences, J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual and Performing Arts and College of Education.
The second Friday ceremony will be at 7:30 p.m. for the Graduate School.
Lopez will speak during both Saturday ceremonies, which begin at 9 a.m. with the commencement of the Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering, Honors College, College of Human Sciences, University Programs, and Wind Energy.
The second Saturday ceremony will be at 1:30 p.m. for the Jerry S. Rawls College of Business Administration, College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, College of Media and Communication and College of Architecture.
