LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - On Wednesday Texas Tech University gave KCBD a look at what the future holds for the Municipal Coliseum and Auditorium.
According Vice Chancellor for Facilities Planning and Construction Billy Breedlove, demolition will begin this week and is expected to be completely finished in August.
Breedlove says the first to go will be auditorium, followed by the coliseum. The inside of the buildings are completely ready to go and equipment stationed around the two buildings will be used to tear them down. No implosions will be necessary.
Various items have been saved from demolition, but it’s a different story for the iconic autograph wall inside the auditorium. Breedlove says its impossible to save the autograph wall. He claims it is dangerous to try to preserve the wall because it’s a completely concrete wall. Photos have been take on the wall to commemorate it. It has not been decided where those photos will go.
The demolition will be a 24/7 project unless there is activity going around it like baseball games.
The area where the auditorium and coliseum stand will be converted into green space until Tech decides what to do with it.
