Localized flooding possible through Tuesday

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Significant rain totals are being reported around the KCBD viewing area, with a couple of locations coming in with greater than 2 inches. The totals are listed later in this post. First, the potential for more rain, storms, and low visibility.

Spotty rain showers and isolated thundershowers are likely today. The thunderstorms are most likley over the southeastern KCBD area. I don’t expect severe weather, but small hail (generally less than 1/4″), gusty winds (generally less than 45 mph), and locally heavy rain are possible. Additional rain falling on wet soils may result in flooding.

Scattered rain showers and a thundershower or two remain in our forecast this evening. Rain chances will diminish overnight, and areas of low visibility in fog will become more likely.

Poor visibility in fog may slow travel Wednesday morning, along with an occasional rain shower. The better chance for rain, however, will gradually shift southeast. As skies clear Wednesday night fog may again develop, along with associated low visibility.

With the above in mind, poor visibility may affect some of the viewing area early Thursday. Otherwise Thursday will be mostly sunny with a breezy and much warmer afternoon.

Sunshine returns Friday, with another breezy - and even warmer - afternoon. Sunscreen and hat weather return! Use both liberally.

Hot afternoons come our way this weekend, the last of the month. Saturday will be partly cloudy with a breezy and hot afternoon. Sunday will be partly cloudy and breezy with another hot afternoon.

Lubbock’s rain event total, as of 11 AM Tuesday, is 0.53″. This brings the total for April to date to 1.55″, which is 0.59″ above the average (0.96″). For the year so far the total is 2.18″, which is 0.74″ below the average (3.46″).

The characters following each community above refer to the rain gauge location in miles and the direction from the community’s center - typically the Courthouse or City Hall, sometimes the downtown or business district. “Lubbock 3WNW TTU” is approximately 3 miles west-northwest of downtown Lubbock (near the northwest corner of the Tech Campus). Rainfall elsewhere in Lubbock may have been less or greater.
